It was 7:30 in the morning the members of Kiwafu (A) microfinance group were gathering for their first group meeting. The group was officially formed two days ago, on the 16th of July 2011. 21 women who lived in the surrounding areas were sitting neatly in a courtyard. For the next four weeks, they will be going through an orientation programme. After the orientation, they will become the newest borrowers under BRAC’s microfinance programme.This group was formed under the newly established BRAC branch in Entebbe. This newly established branch is one of 20 new branches, being set-up as a part of BRAC’s ground-breaking partnership with the MasterCard Foundation in Uganda.

A Bengali organization founded almost 40 years ago, BRAC is one of the largest NGO’s in the world. BRAC does tremendous work in and outside of Bangladesh, and has programs promoting economic development, health, education, gender justice – the list goes on. When I found out I would be working with BRAC this past April I was excited since it is such a pioneering organization, but I was also really looking forward to working with BRAC since I have a soft spot in my heart for Bangladesh. I had the chance to live in Bangladesh for four months last year as a social business intern at the Yunus Centre, and my time in the country was certainly life altering.

Each year, March 24th commemorates the day on which Dr. Robert Koch identified the cause of Tuberculosis (TB), a deadly infectious disease which can be prevented through screening and vaccination and treated with antibiotics. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 1.7 million people died from TB in 2009. The highest number of deaths was in the Africa region. BRAC Uganda is working to lower the incidence of TB through detection and treatment.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day on March 9, 2011, BRAC Uganda asked it's staff and program participants to think about the meaning of International Women's Day. Specifically, the initiative aimed to create awareness and explore widely held perceptions of International Women's Day. Broadly, the initiative sought to bolster BRAC's commitment to establish a gender sensitive working environment.

BRAC and The MasterCard Foundation today announced the expansion of a $45 million partnership to scale BRAC's innovative microfinance multiplied model in Uganda. The announcement, which was made at the opening plenary of the 2011 Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship, will enable BRAC to expand its network to 129 branches, benefiting more than four million Ugandans."The MasterCard Foundation aims to scale innovative microfinance programs in Africa to improve the lives of people living in poverty," said Reeta Roy, President and CEO of The MasterCard Foundation. "BRAC's holistic approach integrates microfinance and livelihood services to help women to become productive economically and build assets to benefit their families."

While the world has been closely watching the Ugandan Elections, there has been another democratic process unfolding in Uganda that BRAC has been monitoring. Youth, who make up around 22 percent of Uganda’s population, have also been electing their representatives in all levels of Government. This process started off in December 2010 with the election of village youth committees and will conclude with the youth parliamentary elections in March 2011.BRAC has been closely following the engagement of adolescent club members in these elections. These adolescent clubs are the very core of the Empowerment and Livelihoods for Adolescent (ELA) programme implemented by BRAC. There are currently 690 clubs set up by the programme across Uganda.

With an objective of sharing knowledge on the various research initiatives of BRAC Uganda, a Knowledge Forum was launched by the Research and Evaluation Team on the 29th of January 2011. In the first meeting of the Forum, Munshi Sulaiman, Coordinator, Research presented an evaluation of a food for training programme in South Sudan.
